the look

a sleeveless antique cotton nightgown in a soft, sheer lawn, cut with dropped shoulders and a v neckline front and back, no waist shaping, just a simple straight fall from shoulder to hem. the neckline is finished with hand worked eyelet embroidery, drawn thread work, and small embroidered bows, all in white on white. this kind of whitework was done entirely by hand at the turn of the century, often by the woman who would wear the piece or by professional needleworkers hired for a trousseau, and it remained a hallmark of fine Edwardian era underpinnings before machine embroidery took over the market in the 1910s and 20s. pieces like this were meant to be seen, if only by a lady's maid or a husband, which is why the handwork went into the neckline rather than anywhere it would be hidden.
