the look

a pair of shorts sewn by hand from a printed cotton flour sack, likely dating to the 1930s. the fabric still carries part of the original sack's stamped company mark in rust orange ink, a reminder of exactly where this cloth came from. drawstring waist, two front patch pockets, side seam construction, no zipper, all consistent with home sewing rather than a commercial pattern house. during the depression, flour and feed sacks were one of the only sources of "free" fabric for families stretching every dollar, and women swapped sacks with neighbors to collect enough matching yardage for a garment like this one. millers eventually caught on and began printing sacks in prettier patterns specifically so women would keep buying their brand, but plain stamped sacks like this one were sewn up too, out of necessity rather than style.

please note: this piece shows real wear. the waistband drawstring ties are frayed and partially torn, the hem edges are raw and fraying, and there's noticeable staining across the body and one pocket.
