the look
a collectible gucci silk shirt from the spring/summer 1994 collection, tom ford's debut era as creative director, made in italy in 100% silk twill. the pastel colorblock patchwork reads like a gucci scarf turned into a shirt: a golden sun face, horsebit loafers with "gucci" stamped on the footbed, pink horsebit hardware, bamboo-handle bags, riding boots and crops, fruit, teacups, butterflies, and tropical fish, set across panels of pink, sage, peach, and lilac. founded in florence in 1921 as a leather goods and equestrian house, gucci built its visual language on exactly these motifs, the horsebit, the loafer, and the saddlery hardware, and ford gathered the whole archive into one cabinet-of-curiosities print as he began redefining the house in 1994. gold-tone gg logo buttons run down the front, and the soft silk hand and roomy cut make it as easy over trousers as on its own. tom ford's early-to-mid 90s gucci is among the most sought-after vintage on the market today.
