the look
an early 1990s east wind code by vivienne tam cropped top, made in hong kong. the front and back are black crinkle-pleated panels scattered with off-white dots that shift and stretch as the pleats move. they're gathered into a ribbed crew neck and set against soft black jersey sleeves, with a short button front and a boxy, cropped shape. tam was raised in hong kong and studied at hong kong polytechnic. she founded east wind code in new york in march 1982, and the label became the base for the east-meets-west design she's known for. she renamed the business vivienne tam before her first new york fashion week show. the "by vivienne tam" label puts this piece late in the east wind code run, and the pleated panels on a soft jersey body make it a nice piece from that last stretch.
