a box of long wooden matches with a groovy flower graphic, very '60s and '70s flower power. the extra length makes it easy to reach the wick in a deep candle jar without burning your fingers. they're pretty enough to leave out next to the candle, and an easy add-on for a gift.

a little match history
the strike-on-box safety match is a swedish invention from the mid-1800s. the trick was splitting the chemistry: part of it goes on the match head and part on the striker strip, so a match only lights against its own box. that also made the box itself a surface worth decorating. for over a century, matchbooks and boxes carried ads, bar logos, and bold graphics. collecting them even has a name, phillumeny. these boxes borrow from that tradition: little pieces of graphic design you actually get to use.
