a céline by phoebe philo polka-dot shift dress from the spring/summer 2015 collection, made in france in a substantial silk-wool blend. big cream dots scatter across a black ground in graduated sizes, cut into a clean short-sleeve shift with a crew neck, a back zip, and quiet side pockets. phoebe philo led céline from 2008 to 2018, the era collectors now call old céline, and built its reputation on exactly this kind of restraint: precise minimalism, unfussy shapes, and print used graphically rather than sweetly. the oversized dot is one of her most recognizable prints from the mid-2010s, and on a silk-wool day dress it reads as playful without tipping into cute. a defining old-céline piece for anyone who follows the philo years.
