about me

This re-made sweatshirt gives a second life to a true 60s art textile. The front panel comes from an original Harwood Steiger “Avian” print, a hand screen-printed cotton designed and produced in Tubac, Arizona, where Steiger and his wife Sophie ran one of the Southwest’s most influential midcentury studios. Steiger is beloved for his bold desert-modern geometry and for treating fabric like fine art, carving his own screens and mixing pigments that aged into the richest matte blues. Each print was pulled by hand, so no two panels land exactly the same, and the slight shifts in color and registration are part of the studio’s signature charm.

“Avian” is one of Steiger’s most recognizable designs, fusing stylized birds with modular geometric blocks for a midcentury meets aviary look. The cobalt colorway is especially sought-after. Here, the textile is given new life through reverse appliqué: the vintage Steiger cotton is set behind a framed opening cut into the sweatshirt, then secured with visible top-stitching for a clean, graphic finish. It’s a one-of-one nod to midcentury craft, made fully wearable.
