the look
this re-made tee spotlights harwood steiger’s “africa” print one of his most graphic, rhythm-forward midcentury designs. the panel features steiger’s signature hand-drawn blockwork: clustered geometric motifs, tribal-inspired linework, biomorphic symbols, and repeating textures that reference the pan-african design influences he studied during the 50s and 60s. every element in a steiger print was screen-carved and pulled by hand in tubac, arizona, which gives his textiles their slight variations and unmistakable character.
we reworked a damaged piece of the original cotton into a framed quilted appliqué panel on a charcoal-washed 90s tee, preserving the bold turquoise-and-black contrast. the fabric has that soft hand steiger collectors love, rotary-printed midcentury cotton with tight weave and high saturation, a look modern repros can’t replicate. the finished piece reads like wearable art: bright, graphic, and absolutely one-of-one.
