about dahlias
dahlias are native to the highlands of mexico and central america, where the aztecs grew them long before they reached europe in the late 1700s. they're named for the swedish botanist anders dahl, and they're mexico's national flower. victorian growers went wild for them, breeding the endless shapes you see today, from tight pompoms to big dinner-plate blooms. started from seed, they'll sprout fast and make sweet small flowers. for a bigger plant, move the seedling and its net pot into a larger pot or the garden once it outgrows the terracotta.
