a small catch-all for rings, keys, and loose change, or for a candle, incense, or anything else that needs a landing spot on a dresser or nightstand. the swirl pattern is taken from historic marbled papers, the kind you’d find lining the inside covers of old leather-bound books.
about marbling
paper marbling is an old technique, and every sheet is one of a kind. ink or paint is floated on a bath of thickened water, then swirled, combed, or dropped into patterns. a sheet of paper is laid on the surface to lift the design off in a single pull. japanese suminagashi goes back to at least the 12th century, and turkish ebru flourished from the 1500s on. by the 1600s to 1800s, marbled papers were a mainstay of european bookbinding, used for endpapers and covers. no two pulls ever come out the same, which is why antique marbled papers are collected on their own.
